Who can cut trees along Medina County roads?
Ohio Revised Code 5543.14 lets the county engineer trim or remove trees, shrubs and other growth in or over the right of way of county roads, and gives township trustees the same power on township roads. Neither has to compensate the landowner. The Medina County Engineer says sight-distance removals are normally at intersections, curves and hills, and that opening a road to sunlight helps dry damp pavement.

How did emerald ash borer reach Medina County?
In October 2006 the Ohio Department of Agriculture found an infested ash along I-71 just south of US 224 and put all of Medina County under its emerald ash borer quarantine. Infested ash typically die within five years. By 2014 the U.S. Forest Service counted the beetle in 80 of Ohio's 88 counties and reported significant ash mortality in northeast Ohio.
A dead ash becomes more dangerous the longer it stands, and large dead branches are the first item on the ISA's tree risk checklist. Planned tree removal before a storm is easier than cleanup after one.

Medina County was created in 1812 and organized in 1818, and it takes its name from Medina in present-day Saudi Arabia (Wikipedia). It borders Cuyahoga, Summit, Wayne, Ashland and Lorain counties and is part of the Cleveland metropolitan area.
Its largest employers include Westfield Insurance, Cleveland Clinic Medina Hospital and county government. The Medina County Park District, established in 1965, now manages more than 9,000 acres, and one of its parks, Allardale in Granger Township, holds more than 100,000 trees planted by a single farmer starting in the 1930s.
Weather and climate in Medina County
Snow and ice split north to south across the county. The County Engineer says areas north of State Route 18 generally get more snow, and Cleveland Hopkins to the north averages 63.8 inches a season while Akron-Canton to the southeast averages 47.2 inches under the 1991 to 2020 normals (NWS CLE; NWS CAK).
Wind is the other half of the story: the National Weather Service confirmed tornadoes with tree damage in the county in 2020, 2021 and 2025. The ISA lists wind, heavy snow, ice and lightning as the main ways storms break or uproot trees.
