What a trimming job can fix

  • Dead and weak limbsDead, dying, diseased and weakly attached branches taken out of the crown.
  • ClearanceLower branches removed to clear roofs, drives, walks and views.
  • Wind and lightFoliage thinned at the edge of the crown.
  • SizeHeight or spread reduced by cutting back to side branches, without topping.

The four standard pruning types

Arborists use a handful of standard pruning types, as described by the International Society of Arboriculture:

TypeWhat it does
CleaningRemoves dead, dying, diseased, weakly attached and low-vigor branches from the crown
RaisingRemoves lower branches to clear buildings, vehicles, walks and views
ReductionShrinks height or spread, often for utility clearance, by cutting back to side branches at least a third the size of the cut stem
ThinningReduces foliage density at the edge of the crown to let wind and light through

Most jobs mix two or three of these. Tell the contractor what you want fixed, such as branches on the roof or a limb over the drive, and let them pick the cuts.

How a tree service request works

  1. Send the form

Your address, the trees involved and the service you need.

  2. It goes to a local tree contractor

Your request is passed to a contractor who works in your area.

  3. The contractor looks and quotes

They contact you, look at the job and give you a price.

  4. You agree on the details

Work, timing and cleanup are agreed directly with the contractor.

Sending a request costs nothing and commits you to nothing. Medina Tree Removal is a referral service, not a tree company; the contractor who contacts you quotes and does the work.

How much of a tree can you cut without killing it?

The ISA's rule of thumb is no more than 25 percent of the crown at one time, and less for mature trees. Young trees tolerate a higher share. Taking off a single large limb can leave a wound the tree may never close.

Where the cut goes matters as much as how many. A proper cut sits just outside the branch collar, the swollen ring where a branch meets the trunk. Flush cuts against the trunk tend to leave dead patches above and below.

When is the best time to prune trees in Ohio?

Light pruning to remove weak, dead or diseased limbs can be done any time of year. Growth and wound closure are best when pruning happens before the spring growth flush.

Heavy pruning right after the spring flush should be avoided, since the tree has just spent its energy on new leaves. Some diseases, such as oak wilt, spread through fresh cuts, so susceptible trees should not be pruned while the disease is active.

Tree Trimming and Pruning questions

Will the power company trim trees near my lines?
Ohio Edison trims around its lines on a four-year cycle and works only around the wires. It does not prune for phone or cable lines or clean up storm debris, and FirstEnergy asks people not to work on trees near power lines themselves. For branches near the service line to your house, call FirstEnergy before any trimming.
How often should trees be pruned?
There is no single schedule. Young trees benefit from early structural pruning so they need less correction later, and the City of Medina prunes its own street trees on a five-year cycle. Mature trees are usually pruned when deadwood, clearance or storm damage calls for it.
Is it safe to trim a tree yourself?
Small branches you can reach from the ground with hand tools are a reasonable DIY job. Anything that needs a ladder and a chainsaw, hangs over a roof, or sits near a wire is where the ISA recommends someone trained and equipped to work in trees.
Can pruning save a storm-damaged tree?
Sometimes. If most of the crown is intact, an arborist can remove broken limbs back to sound wood and the tree can recover. If a large share of the crown is gone or the trunk is split, removal may be the safer choice.
